The basic structure of pot magnets includes a permanent magnet, a steel casing, and a spacer. The steel casing does more than protect the magnetic element from chipping or cracking upon contact with a hard surface; it also plays an important role in the magnetic circuit.
Because the steel casing has much higher magnetic permeability than air, it helps channel and concentrate the magnetic flux toward the open working surface while reducing magnetic leakage. As a result, the magnetic flux follows a more efficient path than it would in a simple bare magnet.
When pot magnets are attached to a ferromagnetic workpiece, a more complete magnetic circuit is formed. This allows them to generate a stronger holding force than ordinary magnets of comparable size, especially when they are in direct contact with the workpiece.

Ferrite pot magnets provide a more economical option for general holding applications. Samarium Cobalt pot magnets are better suited to elevated-temperature environments, while AlNiCo pot magnets can also be used in certain high-temperature designs.

Pot magnets are typically rated by pull force, which may also be referred to as holding force, adhesive force, clamping force, or breakaway force. This value represents the maximum force required to detach the pot magnet from a thick, flat, clean mild steel plate under ideal test conditions. In practice, however, the actual holding performance depends not only on the pot magnet itself, but also on the working conditions in which it is used.
One of the most important factors is the air gap. Any non-magnetic material between the pot magnet and the ferromagnetic workpiece, such as paint, plastic, paper, rubber, dirt, rust, or scale, can weaken the magnetic circuit and reduce the pull force significantly. The thickness, flatness, and magnetic permeability of the contact surface also matter. If the steel plate is too thin, uneven, or magnetically weak, the rated pull force may not be achieved in actual use.
Temperature is another important factor. As the operating temperature rises, the magnetic performance of the pot magnet may decline depending on the magnetic material and assembly design. For this reason, the catalog pull force should be understood as a reference value rather than a universal working load. In practical applications, especially where safety is involved, an appropriate safety margin should always be built into the design.
Choosing the right pot magnet requires a combination of factors rather than a single pull force figure. In practical applications, the mounting form, contact surface condition, working direction, operating temperature, and safety requirements should all be considered together.
